I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with this video.  This is why.

You’re going to see a guy in a club doing magic tricks…and they’re kind of cheesy tricks too.  Who am I kidding.  They’re REALLY CHEESY.  Worse is the way he performs them.  THIS guy looks like he’s trying really hard to pick up girls with magic…which “usually” doesn’t work.

He approaches with magic, he gets too excited, he introduces magic too soon and he comes off as smooth as the hair on an old french ladies legs.  The thing is MOST guys who hear about Mystery doing magic tricks in clubs learn a few tricks and try them out on girls.    Sometimes they find that it’s not that easy.

I created PUMA Skills to teach guys how to PROPERLY use magic, sleight of hand and mentalism tricks to work with women WITHOUT looking like the guy in this video.

One of the things I love about using magic with beautiful women is that single moment of transformation, which I call a spark, where a woman crosses the threshold from skeptic to amazement during a magic trick.

It’s similar to the instant when you’re telling a joke and people are listening, waiting for the punchline…anticipating something and almost in a defensive spirit…daring you to make them laugh.

With a well delivered joke, the punchline surprises them and creates an opening of laughter where they free themselves to laugh and be amused.

The same thing happens with magic.

Often times when you start a magic trick, especially a trick that requires some participation on the girl’s part, she will go into it hesitantly.  She’ll almost be daring you to impress her.  She’s in a cynical state of mind.

But when the “prestige” or effect is revealed there’s that single spark, that moment of astonishment where she really is impressed.  Some girls go with the flow and some girls react the other way and just try to figure out how you did the impossilbe…and tricked her.

Either way, it’s one of the moments I cherish most as a Pick Up Magic Artists is when I get the girl to cross over that threshold into “wonder.”  It’s that moment when real magic can happen.

I was out tonight and experienced that and I was very aware of what was happening with the girl’s attitude.  The real magic is how she changed her entire mood.  And this…is what PUMA Skills and impressing girls with magic tricks is all about.

Who does NOT teach PUA Magic?  Did you ever read “The Game” by Neil Strauss?  If so, did you ever stop and ask yourself “I wonder what magic tricks Mystery does in his game?”  I know I did.  That’s because I’d been using magic tricks to pick up girls for about 7 years prior to reading that.  He and Neil Strauss (Style) used magic openly as a way to DHV or Demonstrate Higher Value.  Why?  Because it’s effective as hell.  But that’s because they knew how to fuse magic and the principles of seduction.

They’re usually not spontaneous, they’re filled with gimmicks and they are teaching magic for magicians…which is one thing that I DON’T do.  But there is an exception to every rule.

The best part of the interview was how much we had in common.  Jay Jay and I talked for about an hour about how using magic to pick up.  Jay Jay gets it.  He understands how to use magic as a magician and then how to flip the script and become a real PUMA.  He’s actually a VIP member of PUMA Skills….but his magic skills surpass mine…because he’s a professional street magician.

Yes.  That’s what PUMA Skills is:  Pick Up Artist Magic Tricks.

Pick up artists have been using magic tricks to meet girls in a way that most guys just don’t understand.  There are many men who believe that when a guys uses magic in a bar or a club he’s approaching the girl with the intent of OPENING a girl with his magic.  That’s really just what the chumps do.

The most effective pick up artist magic tricks are the ones that are spontaneous, close-up, don’t use magic props or visible gimmicks (cards, sponge bunnies…boooo).  They are the principles of sleight of hand or slightly gimmicked dollar bills or coins which you can carry with you and use whenever the moment is right.

It’s true that magic tricks impress women when done correctly.  Done incorrectly though…not so much.

Ten years ago, when I learned my first set of magic tricks to impress girls at a bar, and witnessed how well they worked to take a cold conversation and turn it hot, I began to study the effects that using magic has in flirting and pick up.

I noticed that the more I concentrated just on having fun and the least I made it about trying to pick up girls with magic the easier it got.

My obsession with magic grew and I wanted to learn every magic trick in the hopes that some of them would work to impress girls at a bar.  The more I learned the more I realized I actually couldn’t use.

I searched the internet for “magic tricks to impress girls” and found nothing that would give me exactly what I wanted.  After mastering the art of magic and flirting I created PUMA Skills to reveal which magic tricks work best to impress girls and more importantly, how to do it without APPEARING like you’re using magic to pick up girls.  That was a key difference.

For instance, I never use magic as an opening line or pick up line to meet girls. It’s always introduced later during the conversation instead of up front.  That is a big misconception.  Oh and I never bring cards with me either.

I just discovered a great report…scientific in fact…that shows how magic can actually increase confidence.  This is primarily for school children…HOWEVER…I’ve found that the effect transcends age.

Many of my fellow P.U.M.A. protege’s (Pick Up Magic Artists) have discovered the exact same thing.  That using magic strategically in social situations skyrocket’s their confidence, story telling abilities and success with women.

It’s not about using magic as an opener…because pick up lines never really work.  It goes way beyond that.  See the article below:

ScienceDaily (Sep. 16, 2008) — For years, audiences have been thrilled by the amazing performances of master magicians, such as David Blaine and Derren Brown. Now, the results of a new experiment announced September 11 at the BA Festival of Science in Liverpool suggests that such magical feats can also work wonders with confidence and social skills.

The study, conducted by Rebecca Godfrey, Dr Sarah Woods, and Professor Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire, involved assessing the effect of teaching secondary school children some seemingly impossible illusions, including how to magically restore a rope that has been cut in half, and read another person’s mind.

“Learning magic requires self-discipline, an understanding of how other people think, and an ability to entertain,” noted psychologist Professor Wiseman. “Also, unlike playing computer games, it encourages children to interact with their friends and family. Because of this, we thought it might be a unique and effective way of developing an important set of psychological skills.”

The project involved 50 pupils aged between 10 and 12 at two schools in Hertfordshire. Assessments, taken both before and after just a single lesson at ‘magic school’, revealed dramatic psychological effects, with the results suggesting a significant increase in both sociability and confidence. The researchers also monitored the pupils during a standard lesson commonly used to increase self-esteem, and discovered that performing magic proved more effective at promoting both social skills and confidence.

Initial findings suggest that some children with low self-esteem may also benefit from learning and performing the tricks. Commenting on this part of the project, Rebecca Godfrey noted, “It is early days yet, but these results are very encouraging and we hope that this approach can be used to develop new and exciting ways of reaching out to these children.”

Marvin Berglas from Marvin’s Magic, noted: “These results confirm the many letters and emails that we receive from children saying how their new found talents have elevated their playground status. Also, magic encourages children to interact with their friends and family, and is also both fun and cool.”

I recently read about a new mentalism trick that sounds like a blast to do.  It was meant more for “real magicians” instead of Pick Up Magic Artists, but I think you can apply the principles just as well.

NOTE:  I’ve never done this before…especially for a girl that I’m trying to seduce (LOL) but for anyone who wants to try it and have fun…I welcome your field reports below.

I’m going to paraphrase, add in my own techniques, then give you the actual method in the original source by John Vincent.

First, get a girl into a hypnotic mood where you tell her you want to try something.  Tell her you’re going to induce a minor trance where she’ll feel as though she’s actually been transported to a beautiful beach somewhere tropical.

Grab both her hands in front of you and hold them out in a relaxed position.  Suggest that she close her eyes and relax.  As you speak the next words, lazily bob her hands up and down as if they’re resting on ocean waves.

Tell her to see a giant movie screen in front of her with a living breathing movie of a lush tropical beach with a bright blue sky and few fluffy white clouds lazily drifting by.  Now tell her to step into the screen and she’ll be ON the beach.  Feeling the sand beneath her toes, feeling the fresh salty air from the crystal blue waters on her skin as she lays down in the shade of palm trees and relaxes.

Slowly release her hands to her side.

NOW…we’re going to put into her mind what “appears to be the correct prediction of a coconut.”

“…as you imagine yourself relaxing there in the shade on the beach, you notice a subtle aroma carried by the breeze.  The more you start to notice the smell, the more delightful it is and you realize that it’s the smell of…Well you tell me (and everyone else).  Name it out loud, the tropical smell”

While saying this you’ve got a piece of paper or your cell phone with a text message or some pre-written prediction with the named aroma when she correctly says: “Coconut.”

You can show it to anyone else who’s around or you can ask her to open her eyes and see the prediction or you can hand her the prediction while her eyes are closed and when she opens them she sees the prediction.

Now, there is no NLP in this…no real hypnotic suggestion.  This is pure trickery.

By placing a small amount of coconut oil or perfume on your wrist or hand (which can only be smelled when up close) then gently waving your hand in front of her face during the “trance induction” she’ll actually smell a coconut.  But her eyes are closed and anyone watching will never guess.

That’s it.  Pretty genius in it’s simplicity really.

Now…my thoughts.  Doing this in a bar or nightclub won’t be easy. I would personally do it just because I’m crazy like that.  BUT this would be PER-FECT for a date or alone time when it’s just the two of you or a small group in a place that’s not so crazy like a bar or club.

This is great for intimate moments.

One of the chief effects here is you’ll be putting her in a beautiful state of mind and she’ll believe you have this trance inducing power.  Done right…she’ll really enjoy it and the induced sensuality may pay off later.

OK…so even though it may seem a little corny…if you imagine the right setting and practicing this a bit…you can see exactly how effective it can be.

I went to Austin for the 4th of July this year…guys trip. It was incredible.  Two smoking hot nights of going out on the town and tearing up a new scene.

My friends who know that I use magic tricks as the secret weapon in my game knew that I stood the best chance of opening all sets of girls of that night it seemed.  I had to do all the heavy lifting.

What’s funny is a couple of were expecting me to go up and give a magic show and get the girls talking while they tried to creep in and jones my juju.

Not so fast boys.  I don’t work like that.  See it’s so rare that I ever go up to a girl with a magic trick in hand.  Lame.  I teach that in the PUMA Skills Mastery Course by the way.

I usually approach with a fun line like “Y’all have friendly faces, God that’s such a relief to see.” Then when they ask why I gave them such a nice but hard to decipher complement, I just let them know how other girls stand around looking like a pain in the ass all night.  High five and congratulate them that they don’t seem to be so bitchy looking.

Then after a bit, when I find the right time to mix a trick in, I’ll often start with a mentalism trick that doesn’t involve any gimmicks.  It’s under the radar and when I have them interested, I break away to a whole new conversation.

They always bring the trick up and when they ask me to repeat it, then I’ll do a visual trick with a physcial item in arm’s reach.

Maybe I use a dollar bill, a napkin, a straw, a coin…the thing is it doesn’t matter.  There is no “best” magic trick to pick up girls at a bar.  There’s a lot of little ones that work and if you do them right you’re going to have a lot of fun.

One night in 2001, I was having drinks with a friend of mine at a bar.  We were about to order a drink and my friend grabbed a pack of matches, turned to me and said, “Watch.”  He made a match change colors, vanish and reappear and then tore it in half and restored it right before my eyes!

I know these were probably the only tricks he knew and he thought they were simple…but I thought they were simply amazing!  Fortunately for me, he taught me the methods.  After practicing for about 3 minutes, I knew I had to try them out.

Standing near me at the bar were two girls, out for the night with their party dresses on.  The one nearest me had a sundress on with legs that could make a grown man cry.  Everything on her was put together.  From her highlighted blonde hair to her perfect make up and Prada bag.  This girl meant business.

She and her friend were also giving off a very cold and snobby vibe.  You know the type I’m sure.  It’s hard enough to get the nerve to approach a girl like that and even harder to remember your name once you do…much less engage her in a conversation that will keep her interested.

There’s a lot I know now that I didn’t know then about opening and running game with girls this hot, but that night was different.  I literally didn’t care if she liked me or not…but she was the closest one to me so I could show off my new little magic tricks.

After learning these tricks with my buddy, I was already in a really fun and playful mood.  I bumped her on the shoulder with mine when she was standing next to me.  I said “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there.  Hey, you look smart, tell me if you can figure this out…” (By the way, I’m probably the only guy who’s ever told her she looks “smart.”)

She looked at me and said “What?”  I began to perform the “Color Change” trick with the pack of matches and said “I can’t figure out how it does that…can you tell me?”

By the time I got through with all three tricks, something amazing happened.  She and I were having “fun.”  She was no longer this snobby hottie with fangs!  She was actually very cool.

She pulled me over to her friends a few feet away and told me to do it for them.  I refused and said I’m sorry, I’m off work tonight, I’m not a real magician…I just play one on TV…that kind of stuff.  Then I said I was going back to my friend because it was my round for drinks…which is true.

I see how powerful not performing the tricks again was because after I bought the drinks she came back over and found me.  She was begging to know the secrets.  My, my how the tables have turned.

I never showed her the methods to my future obsession, but instead went off into another flirty conversation about a lot of other things.  That interaction and the way I played it paid off handsomely.  I did show her one more trick that night…much later.  Something about making her clothes disappear.  

Notice in the example above I never asked her if she wanted to see a “magic trick.”  She wasn’t expecting magic until it already happened.  Also, by pulling away and not succumbing to her begging I was able to generate even more curiosity from her.

Obviously, the magic tricks didn’t get me the girl.  But they gave me an angle I wouldn’t have had otherwise. More importantly it enhanced my personality and gave her something that most guys at the bar that night couldn’t…fun.

Every night I went out on the town after that night I performed these tricks for someone.  Either for girls I was hitting on or my friends (who got sick of the same tricks…but they saw how effective they were).

I learned the hard way that opening and approaching a girl with magic tricks is very dangerous to your game.  That first night was beginner’s luck.  But these skills were to powerful to not use in an initial open.  So after time, I figured out a couple of techniques to open a set of girls or a single girl up without looking like a clown.

My favorite and by far the easiest is when I cause the girl I’m interested to come over and open ME!  I’ll reveal that in another chapter in explicit detail though.

So after I saw the light of how well magic works when using it you game I became obsessed with learning more tricks.  I went to every website I could think of to learn as many tricks as I could.  I’ve forgotten more tricks than I know because I never had a chance to use them…they weren’t appropriate for bar and social settings.

I spent over a thousand dollars downloading videos, buying DVD’s, grabbing everything I could get my hands on.  I was “drinking from the firehose of magic!”

In doing all this I was also filtering down all the tricks that I could do when I was out with my friends and discarding all the ones that didn’t.  For instance, I love card magic and I know some great tricks, but I’m not a good card-magician because I don’t take them to bars.  I did get really good at close up though.

But a big difference between being a P.U.M.A. and a close-up street-magician is that P.U.M.A.’s never use objects that make it look like he came out intending to do magic.  If I carry magic with me, it’s probably going to be coin or currency magic and a few other neat tricks of the trade that are completely inconspicuous to the girl we’re performing with.

So let’s skip forward from 2001 to 2008.  I have come to the point where I not only use magic effectively in my game with girls, but now even my friends request magic when they see it.  They also know I’m a great wingman with my magic.  They can pull me over to girls they’re talking to and that’s the only time that I’ll be the dancing monkey…is if I can help them out.  (DISCLAIMER:  Sometimes it doesn’t work out so well for my friend because I get all the attention of the girls they were interested in…I have to be careful with that.)
